want a book?

To thank you all for supporting my shop and my artistic explorations and my occasional ramblings here and there I would like to give away a book. This book...

It's similar to one that's for sale in my shop, but a little bit smaller. Its still lovely and soft and bendy with lots of room for scribbles...

If you would like to receive it then all you need to do is leave a comment below and I'll randomly pick a winner on Monday! If you're stuck for something to say then you could recommend a book for me to read; fiction, non-fiction, whatever; just something you have enjoyed recently :)

Thanks again, couldn't have done it without you :)

I have just finished Lorrie Moore's "A Gate at the Stairs" Although it's not my favourite book that she has written, it is rather lovely. Like your book, blog and now your giveaway ;-)

Your shop is lovely, and I've recently added your blog to my list. I'd like to become better at book binding myself, and look at your beautiful books for inspiration.

As for reads, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, by Annie Dillard, is quite amazing.

I have been inspired by the beautiful books you make to sign up for a book binding workshop this summer. I am so looking forward to it. I would love to use this book to record everything I learn it it about bookbinding. A complete circle!

I've just finished reading all of the Sookie Stackhouse books and really like them. Anything by Jasper Fforde is great, though, because of all the book-related (literature) humor!

Loving your art, too!

I would recommend 'not without my daughter' although i haven't read it for a while its a book that instantly springs to mind and one that i have read over and over.... Having seen your work in the flesh the next step would be to own one of your fabulous books x

Me me me!! I'd love to win the draw for your book :) It looks like one of those books that feels so good in your hand you have to carry it everywhere to write things in secret codes and draw the wondrous things seen every day. Something to cherish even when it requires great care to open as it has grown so old and full with lovely things!
Not really had much time to read lately.. well other that Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld books :) the past 2 books I have read were Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife and Markus Zusak's The Book Thief and thoroughly enjoyed both :)
Happy summer reading!

That is such a beautiful book I would love to own it. Just to touch it would be a treat. I have just read the Once, Now, Then trilogy by the wonderful Maurice Gleitzman. So moving. You would love those books. Primarily written as children's books they are wonderful to read as an adult.

I am always amazed at the perfection and interesting techniques you use for your books. I just finished a bookmaking module at college and it is so hard to get your level of finish. I would really cherish one of your books : )

It seems cheeky to comment - having already been the lucky recipient of one of your beautiful books. But hey, I'm a bookseller - the opportunity to make a recommendation is irresistable. The Housekeeper and The Professor by Yoko Ogawa. It sounds unlikely (a maths professor with an 80 minute memory span), but is a real treasure of a book.

I would recommend Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake' as well as Mark Haddon's 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time'

This lovely book that you made would nicely hold some writing and drawings from my 4 months abroad coming up!

I have just read 'Remarkable Creatures' by Tracy Chevalier for my book club and recommend it. It only took me a few days to read it - good for the summer.
Another lovely book you have made - thank you for the opportunity of a giveaway.

I'd love to own that book. I love the bendiness of it.

I recently read a book that kept me up half the night to finish. It was The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.
A very satisfying read.

Hello Sarah, wow, 20 comments in 4 hours! I love your book and will dream about drawing in it... but in the meantime, what have I read recently? Well I loved "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and the other two books in the series, which I devoured at Christmas. And I still think about Lionel Shriver's "We should talk about Kevin" which I read a couple of years ago. And my bookclub friends HATED me for suggesting "My Name is Red" by Orhan Pamuk but it is a GREAT BOOK, so there! Have fun reading, Sara-in-Oz x

Normally, I don't comment on blogs but I a chance to win a handbound book? Can't pass that up. As for book recommendations, Anne Mccaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series has monopolized my free time lately.

I have just finished by first rounded and backed binding (though not very round!) and am planing on covering it in tracing paper from being inspired by your fantastic forest books. Your new books are always a delight to see!

Time Traveler's Wife-- it's kinda pop'py and what not right now, but I felt like it was VERY well-written and the main character is a paper artist;)

Velma Bolyard said...

you probably don't know this book, published by granary books, turning leaves of mind by lagoranto and reese. it's a book orgy!

what a lovely idea. I have just started to read the 'Hare with Amber Eyes' - a memoir/biography that is so interesting. Highly recommended.

who would not love one of your books? Each one a little work of art.

I have been reading "Jane in Winter" by http://worldexamingingworks.typepad.com/ewix/another blogger. It is a children's book about a fifties childhood. Rather strange but very enjoyable.

Just popped over from scissors + paper rock and totally adore your gorgeous work. I am rarely stuck for things to say but must recommend Audrey Niffenegger to you if you haven't already gone there cos I saw her at our Writer's Week here in Adelaide and she talked about her massive respect for paper and learning how to bind books. She's someone who wants to learn the whole process of publishing and I loved listening to her. One of my all time faves is Siri Hustvedt's, "What I Loved" though and I recommend it to anyone with an artistic leaning.

Oh how lovely! I'd adore to win one of your wonderful books.

As for a book to recomend I'd have to say, Are we nearly there yet? : Travels with my front line family by Rosie Whitehead utterly brilliant and gripping account of a British woman's attempt to navigate her family
through the unreal events of the Baltic war. I couldn't put it down, just wonderful.

Also - on an unrelated point, I have just moved from London to Leeds and am struggeling to find the crafty / arty side of Leeds. Does it have one? Can you give me any tips and hints?

Oh heck, if I'm not too late you can add me in. Another lovely book of yours! I don't know if I'd call this a recommendation--I'm not sure what your taste in books is--but I've been reading Amanda Vickery's Behind Closed Doors: At Home in Georgian England and Making Comics by Scott McCloud. Eclectic, if nothing else.

Yikes! I hope I'm not too late. Monday has come around far too quickly for my liking! I was attempting to compile a 100 recommendations for your one hundredth post but got stuck around the 40 mark. So this morning I decided to share my top 10 instead, so here goes:

1. Film - The Diving Bell and The Butterfly.

2. Book (non-fictional) - By Hand, Shu Hung and Joseph Magliaro.

3. Book (fictional) - My Best Friend's Girl, Dorothy Koomson.

4. CD - The Sea, Corinne Bailey Rae.

5. Blog - Oh so Beautiful Paper.

6. Website - ffffound.com.

7. Plant/Flower - Oleander.

8. Smell - Love ETC, The Body Shop.

9. Colour (suitable for toes and fingers) - Jade 0117, Boots No.7.

10. Something to bake - Blueberry Soured Cream Cake with Cheesecake Frosting = YUM!

1. Preheat the oven to fan 160C conventional 180C and butter and line the base of a loose-based 22cm round cake tin with non-stick baking paper.

2. Put the butter, sugar, eggs, flour, baking powder and vanilla in a bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon for 2-3minutes until lighter in colour and well mixed. Beat in 4 tbsp soured cream, then stir in half the blueberries with a large spoon.

3. Tip the mixture into the tin and spread it level. Bake for 50 minutes until it is risen, feels firm to the touch and springs back when lightly pressed. Cool for 10 minutes, then take out of the tin and peel off the paper or lining. Leave to finish cooling on a wire rack.

4. To make the frosting, beat the soft cheese with the icing sugar and the remaining soured cream in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Spread over the top of the cooled cake (don't be impatient as the frosting will melt if the cake is too warm) and scatter with the remaining blueberries. The cake will keep in the fridge for a couple of days. Bring it to room temperature for about an hour before serving. Enjoy!

Well, I hope you enjoy one of my top 10 as much as I do. Thanks for all the inspiration over the years, Sarah :)

ah, it's lovely!

My favourite book in the entire world is Cruddy by Lynda Barry. But it's out of print so used on amazon would be the way to go for that one.

Hi! I just found you from Scissors, Paper & Rock! I'm fascinated by what you can do with paper...I think I must be a bit clumsy...but At least I can enjoy your creations. I'd love to win your book. It's absolutely beautiful! Lots of love, Amanda xxx
