Sarah, you're right, practice is the most important thing in book binding. Your cover is wonderful, the bird (waterbird?) is a great design and beautifully executed.

It's a water rail or a corn crake, can't think which, there's something so appealing about their feet though, good to draw :)

Glad you like it, it was an experiment to see if acrylic paint would work on buckram... and it seems to work ok!
